By 2030 42% of all Americans will be obese according to recent study
LORQESS (lorcaserin) deceases appetite by stimulating serotonin receptors in the brain. It was denied approval 2 years ago due to safety concerns. The FDA has re-evaluated this medicine and has found it to be safe for use in the obese population. One if its main concerns was that of heart valve problems (which caused the downfall of the BEST weight loss medicine ever: PONDIMIN). Studies have shown no cardiac side effects to date, which is why the FDA is approving it. Before we jump on the bandwagon, MERIDIA, which has a similar mode of action, not only was not very effective, but pulled off the market due to safety concerns after being available for over 10 years.
There are other medications on the market, and since I am a physician, I am able to prescribe FDA approved products to aid in weight loss, unlike the walk-in obesity clinics that may offer non-FDA approved and potentially dangerous supplements, like HcG.
Our philosophy at KAIZEN TOTAL WELLNESS is that the only way to successfully lose weight long term is to change your lifestyle. This is why we employ a dietician and fitness trainers.
However, for those that need more help, we have had success with phentermine, Topamax, naltrexone and wellbutrin.
Please note that while generally safe, ALL medication have potentially serious side effects and should only be used under an experienced physician’s supervision.
Also, not every patient achieves the same results.
At times, we even recommend gastric banding.
The take away message is: There are different ways to lose weight. Without lifestyle changes, 85-95% of patients will gain every ounce back no matter what route they choose.
