RUMOR: Milk of magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) can be used to treat acne.
TRUTH: Despite all the self-help advice on blogs and online communities, there’s no proof that milk of magnesia applied topically improves acne.
But it can irritate sensitive skin...normal skin pH is acidic and milk of magnesia is alkaline.
On the subject of acne, possible causes include hormones, cosmetics, stress, and an increase in resistant bacteria. Women in particular often experience premenstrual flare-ups.
