New thoughts on cholesterol medicationsPosted by drmishner in statins , Lipitor , lipid lowering drugs , Crestor , cholesterol levels , cholesterol |

Over the past few months there have been several studies showing the LACK of any medical benefits with every cholesterol drug on the market with the exception of STATINS (Lipitor, Crestor, etc).
In the past we always thought we had to achieve certain numbers for medications to be effective. Well, there seems to be some questions about that, too.
The new paradigm says that we should look at STATINS as risk reducing medications rather than just lipid lowering drugs. It appears that STATINS lower cardiovascular disease regardless of baseline cholesterol levels and subsequent LDL levels.
So, now the old school thinking of lowering the LDL below 100 or 70 for certain patients is being questioned (especially since side effects go up with the dose).
Please remember that the practice of medicine remains an art and not a science. Medical thinking and recommendations continue to evolve. Stay tuned.........
