Harvey Mishner, M.D., and Medically Supervised Wellness Programs
Dr. Mishner went to the University of Maryland Medical School, completed his training in Internal Medicine in Baltimore and became Board Certified in Internal Medicine in 1981. He started his first medical practice in the Baltimore suburbs, and in 2003 moved to Sarasota, Florida where he founded Lakewood Ranch Primary Care. Due to differences in practice philosophy, Dr. Mishner recently returned to his original role as solo practitioner, and he anticipates the opening of a new office by the end of 2009. He is temporarily maintaining his busy internal medicine practice in Suite 330, at the Lakewood Ranch Medical Office Building until construction is complete on a new state-of-the-art facility.
Located at Lakewood Ranch Boulevard and SR70, the office is designed to encompass Dr. Mishner’s philosophy culled from almost thirty years of practice experience - that it is “much less costly to teach wellness than to treat illness.” In addition to the standard examining and consultation rooms that will be used in Dr. Mishner’s private practice, it will feature a large conference room and fitness studio where ongoing classes and private nutritional and fitness consultation will run as part of the Medically Supervised Wellness Programs.
Although most doctors are trained to treat sickness, it has always been Dr. Mishner’s philosophy to teach and treat health, wellness and prevention.Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, heart disease, diabetes, sleep apnea and arthritis are epidemic in today’s society and all can be related to obesity, which is becoming more and more prevalent. The Metabolic Syndrome, which relates abdominal fat to cardiovascular disease, can be reversed with weight loss. By combining a weight management system of education, motivation and support along with exercise training, we can help prevent these illnesses.
The Medically Supervised Wellness Programs are very exciting in that patients and clients are offered a safe and healthy way to not only to lose weight but to keep it off. Dr/ Mishner supervises every person who joins the program from a medical point of view. We continuously monitor our clients’ weight, blood pressure and lab work to determine the efficacy of their lifestyle changes. In addition, Dr. Mishner maintains a flowchart of the entire group of participants, so that he can observe overall progress being made within the program, and make any adjustments if necessary. The professional staff includes Barbara Bingham, M.C.C., nutritionist and program director, and Janet Lombardo, CFT, an experienced fitness trainer with experience in corporate wellness management and senior/ special needs fitness.
When the new facility opens it will be the first to combine a primary care practice with a facility for wellness education. In view of the current healthcare crisis, Dr. Mishner views this innovation as one very viable solution.
