Here are my comments on a recent article about low back pain which was recently published in MONEY MAGAZINE:
1.COSTS: 80% of the adult population will experience low back pain at some time in their life. The average costs is $6000/year. We agree with these numbers, although most of the costs are PATIENT driven, not PHYSICIAN.
2.PREVENTION: Examine some frequent causes such as...
Poor ergonomics at home or work
Poor posture
Lack of exercise
3.MRI’s: Unless we detect a neurological event we do not recommend routine MRI’s of the back. Most adults will have wear and tear arthritis that probably was present 10-20 years before any symptoms ever occurred. Most abnormalities just CONFIRM to the patient that they are now a member of the “CHRONIC BACK PAIN FRATERNITY AND I”LL NEVER GET BETTER CLUB” Ask yourself,”If I were paying out of my pocket, instead of the insurance company, and my doctor did not recommend an MRI, would I still be willing to pay for it?”
4.TREATMENT: Unless the pain is very mild, it should go away on it’s own in 2 weeks or less. Try heat or ice. Advil or Aleve can also be helpful. Only your physician can determine whether it is something more serious that requires additional
testing.
5.SURGERY: 95% of patients do not and never will require surgery. We recommend physical therapy, massage therapy and exercise therapy. When that does not work, sometimes cortisone injections into the back by a certified pain specialist may help. Surgery should only be considered after ALL other options have been tried.
6. One thing this article (and most physicians) failed to mention is the connection between the mind and the body when it comes to back pain. Until this is recognized, your pain will probably never get better. Don’t think so?.....just ask one of our many satisfied patients/clients who have had life changing experiences.
At Kaizen Total Wellness, located in Lakewood Ranch, Florida, we are please to offer many non-medical alternatives in the treatment of low back pain.
