If you have fibromyalgia with painful tender joints, deep muscle pain and fatigue exercise is probably the last thing on your mind. Whether it's daily walks, stretching, swimming or light resistance training, a low-impact program will help to keep you fit and may reduce pain as well.
Exercise helps patients suffering with fibromyalgia have some control over the amount of pain they feel. Recent studies have shown that for most patients, range of motion, strengthening and aerobic conditioning exercise are both safe ad necessary.
Studies have shown that not only does regular exercise slow down the heart-racing adreneline associated with stress, but it also boost levels of endorphns. - Pain fighting molecules that help reduce anxiety, stress and depression.
Exercise is also helpful in boosting serotonin levels in patients with fibromyalgia. Low seratonin levels can cause mood swings and agression. Lack of exercise can aggrevate low serotonin levels. A stable serotonin levels in the brain is associated with a calming, anxiety-reducing effect.
A regular exercise program benefits people with fibromyalgia in the following ways:
- making weight control easier
- giving range of motion to painful muscles and joints
- improving quality of sleep
- increasing energy
- strengthening bones and muscles
- stimulating the secretion of "happy hormones"
- reducing anxiety levels and depression
- relieving pain
There are no exercise to avoid for patients with fibromyalgia, but it is important to begin slowly. It is recommended that you work with a fitness professional who will show you proper form and will explain how to use resistance training as you build your strength.
