The bioDensity machine - a valuable tool in rehabilitation and conditioning

bioDensityJON

WHAT IS bioDensity?

bioDensity is a safe and controlled approach to the benefits of high impact activity. Impact is the stimulation that enables bone mass density as well as muscular density to develop in childhood.  In adulthood these benefits can be seen in high impact activity such as gymnastics with above normal bone mass density and incredible power-to-weight ratio, but injury risk makes this activity impractical for most adults. Regular use of the bioDensity essentially improves the structure of the body, the building blocks of movement and function for increased quality of life. At KAIZEN TOTAL WELLNESS, all sessions are private and supervised by a bioDensity certified fitness trainer.

IS USING bioDensity SAFE?

Yes. The bioDensity device was designed to be safe, effective and an efficient way to increase bone density, muscle tissue density and connective tissue density. During a bioDensity session each participant is positioned in the strongest biomechanical position to produce force in four different directions. This ensures that the body can safely withstand the load that is being provided in the activity. Also, the machine is self-loaded so each person dictates the force that is applied (i.e. you are withstanding the load that you, yourself produce).

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE A bioDensity SESSION?

Your first bioDensity session will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The session can be completed in street clothes (flat soles shoes are recommended). All other sessions are shorter in duration.

WHAT WILL I “FEEL” BEFORE AND AFTER DOING A bioDensity SESSION?

When completing the four movements in bioDensity you will be required to produce maximal force for five seconds each. The force that you produce would be equivalent to pushing an object of significant weight and size in four different directions: (1) forward using your hands; (2) forward using your feet; (3) upward using your knees and (4) upward using your arms and legs together. After completing a bioDensity session you will feel like you’ve completed physical work. You will feel warm (from increased blood circulation and work completed by the muscles) and you will notice an improvement in your posture (from the decompression of the spine and joints from the impact loading). Within 24 hours you feel muscular fatigue but not soreness.

WILL MY MUSCLES FEEL “SORE” AFTER DOING A bioDensity SESSION?

Unlike traditional weight training you will not experience the type of muscle soreness that usually accompanies those types of training. Because the movements only require (5) seconds of maximal work your body will not produce the by-products that cause muscle soreness.

WHAT DOES THE bioDensity PERFORMANCE REPORT TELL ME?

The bioDensity report is a visual representation of the average maximal loads reached during each bioDensity session. In each of the graphs (Chest Press, Leg Press, Core Pull and Vertical Lift) you will see your baseline reading and the last ten sessions recorded. It will also document your overall increase in strength from your first session to the last and provides feedback on your improvement after each session. Your bioDensity certified trainer will be happy to not only print or e-mail a summary of each session to you (or your physician) but will also be happy to explain the results to you.

What is 'Osteogenic Loading?' - bioDensity training

bioDensity13

bioDensity training - osteogenic loading-  has been studied for the past 6 years. Osteogenic loading improves muscle and bone mass/strength using isometric, low impact exercises. The bioDensity machine allows us to actually measure these improvements.
Over 22,000 patients have been studied and the results are as follows:

1.After 3 weeks, we see, on average, a 45% improvement in force production.
2. After 6 weeks, that improves to 66%.
3. After 9 weeks we see, on average an 89% increase in bone and muscle mass.

(place Variance graph here)

Please note that we are able to compare your strength and progress with patients of all ages!

bioDensity, Bone Density AND Osteoporosis

According to a study on weight bearing and muscle loading in respect to bone mineral accrual in pre-pubescent 10-13 year old girls, there was a 35%-45% increase in muscle mass. According to researchers, the impact the mechanical loading on the musculoskeletal structure could be anywhere from 4-9 times body weight.
With bioDensity, this magnitude of this loading is made possible while maintaining safety, even in the elderly.
Females over 70 are able to generate anywhere from 478 pounds to 1129 pounds of mechanical load during a leg press. In other words, these females are able to generate from 3 to 6 times their body weight in a safe user friendly environment to help maintain bone mass as they age.

Sports performance and the bioDensity machine

As described in a a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, significant muscular strength gains can be seen from just a single optimal biomechanical load exposure (1), the bioDensity machine now makes this optimal load exposure possible and safe for athletes. Further, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) research indicates mechanical loading, of forces beyond bodyweight, increases bone density(2).

"Discoveries made in the course of space biomedical research on bone are already contributing to a better understanding of osteoporosis and the treatment of bone mass loss on Earth as well as in space. The single most important contribution that NASA research has made to the understanding of bone deterioration in osteoporosis is heightened awareness of the importance of gravity, activity, and biomechanics - that is, the mechanical basis of biological activity - in bone remodeling.

Mechanical forces - the action of energy on matter - appear to coordinate bone shaping processes. The standard theory of bone remodeling states the body translates mechanical force into biochemical signals that drive the basic processes of bone formation and resorption. Aging, especially in post-menopausal women, and exposure to microgravity uncouple bone resorption and formation. When this uncoupling occurs, formation lags behind resorption, and the result is bone loss."

bioDensity machine may increase bone density

Runners tend to have higher levels of bone mass density but as the heel strikes repetitively bone fracture can occur. A new technology out of the US, bioDensity, provides the type of mechanical loading which studies have found increases bone density – without the injury risk associated with impact.

This fixed resistance machine delivers a load that works like an extremely intense exercise, but with no risk of injury. It targets and stimulates all the major muscle groups in one short concise session – and only needs to be done once a week to get results.

“The normative data shows the 75th percentile leg press load exposure for males between the ages of 21 to 29 is 876 Kilos. This output represents a load many times the typical athlete’s body weight. Case reports have seen bone mass density increases of up to six per cent, in less than two years of use,” explains Dr. John Jaquish, the brains behind bioDensity.

At Kaizen Total Wellness, we are pleased to offer bioDensity along with the amazing Power Plate to our community.

Ken Valdiserri, (Sports Marketer / Consultant) about his bioDensity experience

"A company I am currently consulting with is going to change the way people train and how sports teams evaluate talent and the strength progressions of each player.
Here is a snap shot of my last 9 weeks of using this technology which involves 5 minutes only 1 time per week. There are 4 core exercises – a chest press, leg press, ‘crunch’ and a dead lift. The concept is to do each exercise until absolute muscle failure. At that point of muscle failure, you are building myofibril muscle density and bone density as well.
Very unique and it is not to say that you don’t do other forms of exericize or cardio but, this is a modality that takes all of 5 minutes per week that can show muscle strength improvement from 1 week to the next. Tony Robins has bought one machine for each of his three homes, the UFC has bought 3 and the Google HQ has one unit. Really fascinating stuff where you get an email and / or print out of your results each week. With over 300,000 data points, there has not been one injury recorded so it is non invasive and low risk for people of all ages."

Fitness and Fatness Independently Linked With CVD Risk Factors

February 6, 2012 (Columbia, South Carolina) — Maintaining or improving current fitness levels, as well as not packing on the fat pounds, are both independently associated with a lower risk of developing hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and hypercholesterolemia in healthy adults, research shows.
"We know that people who exercise will lose weight and improve their fitness, but in the real world, some people don't lose weight even though they might gain some fitness," Dr Duck-chul Lee (University of South Carolina, Columbia) told heartwire . "Some of these people might stop exercising because they expected to lose weight and haven't, but this study shows that they should also be aware about their changes in fitness. Even though they don't lose weight, if they increase their fitness, they can offset some of the negative effects of being overweight."
The results of the study, an analysis of the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (ACLS), a prospective study of individuals who received preventive medical examinations, are published online February 6, 2012 in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Fitness and Fatness Both Important
To heartwire , Lee noted that fitness and fatness are two variables that consistently change over time in individuals and that there are many diverse combinations of fitness and fatness in US adults. In fact, the "fit-fat" paradox has been demonstrated in some studies, showing that improvements in fitness can eliminate the harmful effects of fatness and suggesting that fit but fat individuals might not develop health problems.
In the ACLS analysis, 3148 healthy subjects underwent three medical examinations, with fitness levels assessed using maximal treadmill testing and fatness documented with body-mass index (BMI) and skinfold measurements of percentage of body fat. During a six-year follow-up after the second medical examination, 752 subjects developed high blood pressure, 426 developed metabolic syndrome, and 597 developed hypercholesterolemia.
Individuals who maintained or improved their fitness levels had a 26% and 28% lower risk of developing hypertension, a 42% and 52% lower risk of developing metabolic syndrome, and a 26% and 30% lower risk of developing elevated levels of LDL cholesterol, respectively. These reductions were observed after adjustment for potential confounders and baseline fitness levels.
For those subjects who got fatter in follow-up, as measured by percentage of body fat, they had a 26%, 71%, and 48% higher risk of developing hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and hypercholesterolemia, respectively, when compared with individuals who lost weight. Similar results were observed when BMI was used as the criterion for fatness levels.
Every 1-MET improvement in fitness was associated with a 7%, 22%, and 12% lower risk of developing hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and hypercholesterolemia, respectively, while every unit increase in percentage of body fat was associated with a 4%, 10%, and 5% increased risk of developing the cardiovascular risk factors.
"In the real world, people change their fitness levels or fatness over time," said Lee. "Fitness and fatness, not the baseline levels, but the changes over time, are both independently important to reduce cardiovascular disease risk factors."
Attenuating the Adverse Effects of Weight Gain
In joint analyses, the researchers found that patients who had stable or increasing amounts of fatness in combination with loss of fitness had significantly higher rates of cardiovascular risk factors when compared with the reference group, that being individuals who gained fitness over time and lost fat. They did observe that losing fitness regardless of fat changes and getting fatter irrespective of the change in fitness levels were associated with a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome. The adverse effects of getting fatter were attenuated slightly if fitness was maintained or improved, while declines in fitness could be offset by reductions in body-fat percentage.
"Maintaining or improving fitness levels and preventing fat gain are both important, independent of the changes of each other," said Lee. "Second, we found that the ideal combination is to improve fitness and prevent fat gain, but as long as individuals maintain fitness and fatness, they are not likely to be at higher risk of cardiovascular disease risk factors. Losing weight and gaining fitness is very challenging to the general population, but maintaining fitness and fatness are less so and more doable."

Do you have sore and arthritic knees?

At Kaizen, we have been recommending physical therapy and strengthening exercises for our knee patients for years. Here is an article from Medline that concurs with our philosophy:

Health Tip: Exercise for Stronger Knees

If your knees are sore, it may seem better to skip exercise than to make a trip to the gym.
But the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons says exercise may actually help strengthen aching knees, reducing stress on the joints and helping to alleviate pain.
The academy says stronger muscles that support the knee joints will provide:
    •    Greater muscle strength, leading to better ability of the knees to absorb shock.
    •    Greater muscle flexibility, reducing knee soreness.
    •    Less strain on the knee, helping to prevent additional injury.
Our Power Plate (full body vibration) and bioDensity Machines (isometric) have been proven to strengthen knees and lessen pain, allowing for more mobility in a safe medically supervised environment.
(Please remember that if you are overweight, your chances of developing significant knee pain is 7x greater then the general population! So don’t forget about our healthy weight loss programs.)

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle: Laughter is Important!

An elderly man was stopped by the police around 2 am and was asked where he was going at this time of night.

The man replied, " I am on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late."

The officer then asked, "Really? Who is giving that lecture at this time of night?"

The man replied, "That would be my wife."

This man is obviously not a member of Kaizen Total Wellness, where he would have availed himself of the services of a nutritionist, certified fitness trainers,  or a massage therapist. Probably why he was out all night getting into trouble, no doubt!

We have a professional team of wellness consultants that also includes our physical therapist.
Our gym contains the exclusive combination of fitness/rehabilitative equipment: bioDensity and Power Plate machines.
Medicare and insurance may be accepted for certain services.
Programs and services are available to everyone in the community.

Obesity and Reduced Lung Function

Are you Short of Breath?
There are several reasons why obese people get short of breath. When you are heavy, your diaphragm can not expand enough to allow you to take a deep breath. Also, heavy people generally do not exercise, leaving them in a deconditioned status. The last reason is that fat cells in the abdomen lead to inflammation in the lungs, further decreasing lung capacity.
Here is an article showing how shortness of breath may in itself be a precursor to diabetes or metabolic syndrome (obesity, hypertension, abnormal lipids, gout and diabetes)
There is a reason why we consider obesity to be a major disease and why we have many programs in our office to help you make lifestyle changes to try to prevent these diseases.
Our practice is one of the few in the United States to employ dietitians, fitness trainers, physical therapists and massage therapists. We are aligned with the nationally known Venice Nutrition System and even have our own gym with our exclusive Power Plate and bioDensity machines.

Obesity in Adults Is Associated With Reduced Lung Function in Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes

The Strong Heart study
Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purposes of this study were to investigate whether reduced lung function is associated with metabolic syndrome (MS) and diabetes (DM) in American Indians (AIs) and to determine whether lower pulmonary function presents before the development of DM or MS.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS The Strong Heart study (SHS) is a multicenter, prospective study of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its risk factors among AI adults. The present analysis used lung function assessment by standard spirometry at the SHS second examination (1993 to 1995) in 2,396 adults free of overt lung disease or CVD, with or without DM or MS. Among MS-free/DM-free participants, the development of MS/DM at the SHS third examination (1996 to 1999) was investigated.
RESULTS Significantly lower pulmonary function was observed for AIs with MS or DM. Impaired pulmonary function was associated with MS and DM after adjustment for age, sex, abdominal obesity, current smoking status, physical activity index, hypertension, and SHS field center. Both forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) were negatively associated with insulin resistance or DM severity and with serum markers of inflammation (P < 0.05). FVC and FEV1-to-FVC ratio both predicted DM in unadjusted analyses but not when adjusted for covariates, including waist circumference. In the adjusted model, abdominal obesity predicted both MS and DM.
CONCLUSIONS Reduced lung function is independently associated with MS and with DM, and impaired lung function presents before the development of MS or DM; these associations may result from the effects of obesity and inflammation.

Only 15 minutes a day can lengthen your life!

At both Kaizen Total Wellness and in my medical practice we try to get all of our patients to lead a more active lifestyle. Whereas 15 minutes of moderate exercise increasing life span by 3 years doesn’t seem that impressive, we find that the quality of life is dramatically improved both physically and mentally. We like our patients to try to do aerobic activities (walking, biking, swimming, etc.) for at least 30 minutes everyday and weight resistance 2-3 times a week. Our low impact weight resistance programs are safe for seniors and 15 minutes twice a week with our fitness trainers is equivalent to spending 1 hour three times a week in a conventional gym.

Fifteen Minutes of Moderate Daily Exercise Lengthens Life, Taiwanese Study Finds

ScienceDaily (Aug. 17, 2011) — Taiwanese who exercise for 15 minutes a day, or 92 minutes per week, extended their expected lifespan by three years compared to people who are inactive, according to a study published in The Lancet"Exercising at very light levels reduced deaths from any cause by 14 percent," said study senior author Xifeng Wu, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center Department of Epidemiology. "The benefits of exercise appear to be significant even without reaching the recommended 150 minutes per week based on results of previous research."
Lead author Chi-Pang Wen, M.D., of the National Health Research Institutes of Taiwan, and colleagues also found that a person's risk of death from any cause decreased by 4 percent for every additional 15 minutes of exercise up to 100 minutes a day over the course of the study. Those exercising for 30 minutes daily added about four years to life expectancy.
"These benefits were applicable to all age groups, both sexes and those with cardiovascular disease risk," the authors note.
If inactive people in Taiwan were to do low-volume daily exercise, one in six deaths could be postponed by their reduced risk of dying, the authors report. It would be an estimated reduction in mortality similar to that from a successful tobacco control program.
The prospective observational study involved 416,175 Taiwanese who participated in a standard medical screening program run by MJ Health Management Institution between 1996 and 2008. Participants were followed for an average of eight years.
For the exercise study, participants completed a questionnaire covering their medical history and lifestyle information. They characterized their weekly physical activity for the previous month by intensity -- light (walking), moderate (brisk walking), vigorous (jogging) or high vigorous (running) -- and time.
To account for occupational effects, participants also characterized their physical activity at work, ranging from sedentary to hard physical labor.
Those who reported less than one hour a week of leisure time physical activity were classified as inactive -- 54 percent of all participants. Others were classified as low, medium, high or very high based on the duration and intensity of their exercise. Researchers calculated mortality risk and life expectancy for each group.
Thirteen other variables were analyzed: age, sex, education level, physical labor at work, smoking, alcohol use, fasting blood sugar, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, body mass index, diabetes, hypertension and history of cancer.
Those who engaged in low-volume exercise had lower death rates than inactive people regardless of age, gender, health status, tobacco use, alcohol consumption or cardiovascular disease risk.
The researchers note that the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. A third of U.S. adults meet that guideline; about 20 percent of adults in China, Japan or Taiwan meet it.
"A recommendation of 15 minutes of daily exercise should be promoted to East Asian populations," the authors note.
The study's findings of reduced mortality through even moderately intense exercise are likely to hold true for other populations, Wu said, even though the total amount of time spent or workout intensity required for a health benefit might differ. "These findings can stimulate people to exercise as much as they can and to not be frustrated that they can't reach the 30 minute per day guideline."
This is the first collaboration between Wu, Wen and the MJ Health Group, a major health screening company with more than 600,000 participants in its health database. They have formed the Asian Health Screening Cohort to conduct major research projects. Wu provides scientific expertise with Wen, who also is based at China Medical University Hospital, while MJ Health Group contributes patient epidemiological and clinical data as well as a biobank of tissue samples.
Two other ongoing collaborative projects include development of a liver cancer risk prediction model and a study of telomere length, genetic variation and cancer risk. The second project is funded by an MD Anderson Sister Institute Network Fund Grant. MD Anderson and China Medical University Hospital have a sister institution agreement.
The exercise project was funded by the Taiwan Department of Health Clinical Trial and Research Center of Excellence and the Taiwan National Health Research Institutes.
Co-authors with Wen and Wu are: co-lead author Jackson Pui Man Wai, Ph.D., of the Institute of Sport Science, National Taiwan Sport University; Min Kuang Tsai, Yi Chen Yang and Hui Ting Chan of the Institute of Population Science, Taiwan National Health Research Institutes; Tsai and Yang also are with the China Medical University Hospital; Ting Yuan David Cheng, University of Washington Department of Epidemiology; Meng-Chih Lee, M.D., Institute of Medicine and Department of Family and Community Medicine, Chung Shan Medical University and Hospital; Chwen Keng Tsao of MJ Health Management Institution; and Shan Pou Tsai, Ph.D., The University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston.

Calcium and Osteoporosis

What is the role of Calcium on osteoporosis?
Here we go again. Who knows? There have been several studies showing that high doses of calcium supplements can increase the risk of heart disease, especially if taken on an empty stomach.
Our recommendations: Try to take 500 mg/day of a supplement and get the rest from vitamin enriched foods and exercise.
Genetics and life style play a large role and it seems to be much more important to get enough VITAMIN D and sunshine in your life as well as regular TOTAL BODY WEIGHT RESISTANCE EXERCISES.
Sure, prescriptions can help, but I have seen so many failures that medications should only play a part of  your treatment. Of course, they are expensive and now come loaded with increased long side effects after you have been on them for more then 5 years.

At Kaizen Total Wellness,( www.drmishner.com) we utilize the latest state of the art equipment along with certified fitness trainers to help our patients achieve their goals .Our exclusive Power Plate and bioDensity machines were actually invented by the Russian Space Program in the 1970’s and is still being used by NASA to this day.

The bioDensity Machine: Different From Conventional Weight Bearing - More Effective!

Why is the bioDensity machine more advanced and safer than conventional weight-bearing exercise? With conventional resistance training, a person picks up a weight (or moves a bar that’s connected to a weight stack) and imposes load on the body. In the course of the range of motion there is a risk of injury. With bioDensity™ stimulation however, the load used is created by the individual exerciser. This means that no matter how hard one exercises the load that is being dealt with is never beyond what is safe. This exercise can be done in street clothes and takes less than 5 minutes/week. Combined with our Power Plate, 15 minutes 2-3times/week is like going to the gym for 3 hours/week.

For more information, or to schedule a complimentary demonstration, speak to one of our fitness instructors at Kaizen Total Wellness. 941-556-7788. Most insurances, including Medicare accepted.
