Advocate for your Physical Therapy

PhysicalTherapist

•    The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) and physical therapists are active in lobbying Congress to make sure that patient services remain covered under programs like Medicare. It is important for patients to also let their voices be heard!
    •    Preserve Your Access to Health Care
    •    As you may know, Medicare limits or "caps" the amount it will pay for outpatient physical therapy services in a calendar year. Your physical therapist is aware of this financial limitation and can apply for an exception if your care requires services above the cap. This means that you will be able to continue to receive the physical therapy services that you need.

    •    Support our Campaign to Stop the Cap!
    •    APTA is urging physical therapists and patients to contact Congress to prevent a hard cap on Medicare-covered physical therapy services from going into effect in 2013.

Exercise making its way to doctors’ prescription pads

So, your doctor told you to exercise, giving you what many physicians are recommending nowadays, “walking” orders” or an “exercise prescription.”
There is a reason he or she advised you to not be sedentary and begin a fitness regimen. Exercise has been proven to prevent injury and ward off disease.
The latest research documenting these benefits was reported by the Centers for Disease Control last week and featured in an article by Associated Press writer, Mike Stobbe, who wrote: “A government survey found nearly 33 percent of adults who saw a doctor in the previous year said they were told to exercise. That was up from about 23 percent in 2000.”
The CDC study reported that diabetics were among the most likely to get these orders than others with chronic conditions. Ladies, women also received this advice more than men according to the organization’s research.
The survey consisted of 22 thousand adults in the United States with many receiving recommendations to get moving, regardless of their age. “The most dramatic — and surprising — increases were reported in patients age 85 and older. In 2000, about 15 percent were told by doctors to exercise. By 2010, almost 30 percent were getting such a recommendation.”
The CDC said that in addition to “reducing the risk of chronic health conditions,” exercise has many other benefits as well, “Engaging in regular physical activity can reduce medication dependence, help maintain functional independence, and improve the quality of life for older adults.”
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) took this advice a step further in a separate study reported last year. Their research proved that in addition to the exercise prescription a counselor would also see better results overall and improved vital signs. “Research showed that patients who were given a tailored exercise prescription and behavior change counseling program by their family physician, rather than an exercise prescription alone, had a higher level of fitness and physical activity and lower systolic blood pressure.”
The lead author of the study, Dr. Robert Petrella, was also quoted on the ACSM site stating, “To really make an impact, patients need a personalized exercise plan or a recommendation to a qualified professional who can guide them along the way.”
As a trainer who has worked with many who have received these recommendations to exercise, I suggest starting off on a plan in a physical therapy setting if you have a chronic orthopedic or heart condition. That way, you can be sure you’re doing what is safe for you.
If you qualify for physical therapy the next step would then be to bridge into working with a personal trainer. A good personal trainer will do an entire health history evaluation and assessment. From there he or she will discuss your goals with you, guide you and of course motivate you.

What makes Kaizen unique? Trainer Jason Balducci, in his own words

JasonWEB

"Kaizen Total Wellness® stands out amongst competitors due to two main factors ... Health Protocol and Training Equipment. At Kaizen, we take a progressive approach to treating clients. We believe in small steps towards long-lasting results. Further, we utilize a holistic protocol encompassing Physical Therapy, Nutrititional Therapy, Exercise Therapy, professional Medical services and Massage Therapy. Our equipment is state-of-the-art and one of a kind in our neck of the woods. We combine Vibrational Training on the Powerplate with Isometric Instrumentation via the bioDensity to give a unique modality of physical training unlike anything else around.
We are effective due to a few attributes - Compliance, Consistency and Compassion. Our treatment sessions run for 30 minutes and we have many working individual come on lunch breaks or after work. Most clients find the 30 minute session more than enough time to accomplish their personal and health goals. A certified exercise specialist is always with the client through the session, correcting and modifying based on the needs and wants of the client and therapist. Even though each session is varied and personalized for the client, they know we strive to meet their treatment and wellness agendas every time. Clients are trained with specific goals in mind per session. Finally, we just plain care about the health and well-being of our clients. The ultimate goal is client satisfaction, and happiness with the program on their continued journey towards wellness."

Jason Balducci has his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology and is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the American College of Sports Medicine. After completing specialized training with bioDensity and Power Plate equipment, Jason became certified in utilizing isometric and high vibration technology unique to our physician-supervised wellness center gym. His background includes being the Coordinator for a non-profit multifunctional health center in Virginia, 'Sheltering Arms', working with doctors and physical therapists on rehabilitation and fitness improvement for underpriviledged populations. Jason is acquiring his Masters Degree at the East-West College of Natural Medicine.

Physical Therapy improved her bowling!

GB  is a 70 year old female with a sudden onset of vertigo that lasted 3 days, her intense symptoms resolved but she was left with poor balance and a lower grade feeling of dizziness.  She came in to see Dr. Jill Rose, our Physical Therapist, and we have been working on her balance and challenging her vestibular symptom with a variety of activities. Her balance and feeling of dizziness has significantly improved.  She is very active and happy to be able to return to golf and bowling.

Do you have sore and arthritic knees?

At Kaizen, we have been recommending physical therapy and strengthening exercises for our knee patients for years. Here is an article from Medline that concurs with our philosophy:

Health Tip: Exercise for Stronger Knees

If your knees are sore, it may seem better to skip exercise than to make a trip to the gym.
But the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons says exercise may actually help strengthen aching knees, reducing stress on the joints and helping to alleviate pain.
The academy says stronger muscles that support the knee joints will provide:
    •    Greater muscle strength, leading to better ability of the knees to absorb shock.
    •    Greater muscle flexibility, reducing knee soreness.
    •    Less strain on the knee, helping to prevent additional injury.
Our Power Plate (full body vibration) and bioDensity Machines (isometric) have been proven to strengthen knees and lessen pain, allowing for more mobility in a safe medically supervised environment.
(Please remember that if you are overweight, your chances of developing significant knee pain is 7x greater then the general population! So don’t forget about our healthy weight loss programs.)

Power Plate and Neuropathy

Noted success:

We've had a great deal of success treating patients with peripheral neuropathy. A combination of physical therapy and fitness training on the Power Plate and bioDensity machines has been extremely effective for patients who have not responded to medications. In addition, our patients with Parkinson's Disease have shown a marked improvement in balance, strength and flexibility as well as in stiffness and ambulation.

Physical Therapy and Diabetes

During a nutritional consult recently, my diabetic patient remarked how
pleased they were with results from working with Dr. Jill Rose in our
Physical Therapy department. Specifically, one of their symptoms due to
diabetes is poor sensation in their feet, and last year this had been a
factor in them losing their balance and sustaining a bad fall.  Fortunately
no bones were fractured but the recovery was a slow and arduous process,
something they hope to never have to go through again.  After the fall, the
patient's activity level had to dramatically decrease which led to weight
gain and lean muscle loss. Anything that can help prevent balance loss or
falls is a worthwhile investment in time and energy. Jill has been doing
Physical Therapy to improve balance and strengthen this patient's weak leg
muscles.  My patient noted that because they feel so much stronger they are
more motivated to resume their daily walks which they had really missed. It
is clear that the Physical Therapy work is significantly decreasing their
risk of a fall and injuries.

Our physical therapist: Power Plate results on neuropathy

Dr. Jill Rose, DPT
Physical Therapist at Kaizen Total Wellness® Center

I have worked with many patients with neuropathy who have tried multiple avenues to relieve their pain, tingling, numbness and swelling with no improvements.  We use a program with the Power Plate and specific exercises, and after working with many of these patients I amazed at the results that I am seeing.  I have seen patients that had no sensation in their feet improve to full sensation.  I have seen reductions in redness, pain and swelling in 2 weeks.  Patients are reporting improvements in their strength and balance as result of their improved ability to walk and exercise.

Strength & Flexibility Increase Noted by Trainer Jennifer Dziob

Jennifer Dziob, Certified Fitness Trainer, Certified Power Plate Trainer at Kaizen Total Wellness  reports significant progress in flexibility and strength:

Mr. "X" started the Kaizen program a little over 3 weeks ago.  He came to us as a 67-year old male who testified that he had not been fit since he played college football.  As a fitness professional, I noticed that he demonstrated very limited flexibility as well as poor posture.  Mr. X complained that experienced severe hip pain daily that also disrupts his sleep patterns.

Today 31/2 weeks later, he has shown great improvement in his posture, greatly reduced hip pain, overall increase in energy, an increase in flexibility, has lost 5 lbs, and has an overall strength increase of 120%.

Jennifer Dziob has been a certified trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine for seven years. She completed specialized Power Plate® training and is certified utilizing high vibration technology for exercise programs in conjunction with physical therapy. She has worked extensively with injury-rehab patients and with special populations including seniors and Parkinson's patients. Jennifer designed reconditioning and exercise programs for cardiac patients and pregnant women.

Fighting Chronic Pain

According to ABC News, 1/3 of Americans live with chronic pain. The costs to the country are more than heart disease and cancer combined!

Pain, whether due to fibromyalgia or arthritis can be prevented and treated very effectively.

As far as “back patients” the American public has been brainwashed into thinking they will never get better. If you fracture an arm, it gets better. If you sprain an ankle, it gets better. So why doesn’t back pain get better?

Step number one is to realize the psychological impact of pain. I have never seen a patient under stress or depressed ever get rid of their pain. It’s the classic chicken and the egg. Pain makes you depressed....depression (stress) increases pain....and so on. So the first thing we have to do is teach you how to cope better.

Step number two is physical activity. It wasn’t that long ago that we forbid our patients from exercising, thinking it would make things worse. WRONG! As it turns out this couldn’t be further from the truth. Combining aerobic and weight resistant activities (exercise sounds too much like work!) may do wonders for pain.

At Kaizen we have been very successful with this approach. Just ask one of our clients, a retired 59 year old attorney who is now pain free, on no medications and playing golf and tennis!

For more information, or to set up a free demo on our exclusive Power Plate/bioDensity equipment combined with physical and massage therapy, please call (941)556-7788.

We're expanding!

That's right, we're expanding to include on-site balance testing and physical therapy integrated services, unique to the West Coast of Florida. We're very happy to announce the physical therapists  from Neuromuscular Therapy Center have joined Kaizen Total Wellness.

This team will provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, massage therapy and balance therapy services to our patients/clients. We are also pleased to announce that most insurance plans and Medicare are now being accepted. Please call for further information. (Unfortunately we cannot accept insurance for dietary/nutritional services). Kaizen is also pleased to offer state of the art computerized balance evaluations to help prevent falls.

The advantage of having integrated physical therapy, balance testing and fitness training utilizing the combination of Power-Plate® equipment and bioDensity® technology is a tremendous advantage for those wishing to gain or maintain strength throughout the process of aging and recuperation from injury or surgery.

Statistics show that 30% of all Americans over 65 will have a fall that will cause an injury required medical attention.  At Kaizen Total Wellness, our approach is to prevent the injury through medically supervised balance testing and the risk of falling and prescribe physical therapy and fitness training to address these issues. Medicare and major insurance frequently cover such medically supervised and prescribed programs upon diagnosis.

Specifically, Power Plate® and bioDensity® training have proven effective in the treatment of a wide range of medical conditions:

  • Metabolic Syndrome- builds muscle which improves insulin sensitivity and increases metabolism / calorie burning, and helps to decrease visceral fat.
  • Deconditioned (ie. Muscle Atrophy, Cardio Wellness)- Exercise programs are appropriate for various disease states to improve exercise tolerance and shortness of breath.
  • Osteoporosis/Osteopenia and At Risk for Fall or Injury-  helps to improve core strength, balance, and agility.
  • Neuropathies- improves circulation and decreases pain and paresthesias.
  • Diabetes- improves insulin sensitivity by improving physical fitness and stamina – medications should be adjusted prior to exercising to prevent hypoglycemia.
  • Post-Surgical Orthopedic Conditioning and Strengthening – by surgeon referral only
  • Arthritis (Degenerative Disc and Joint Disease)- improves circulation to muscles, bones, and cartilage allowing oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to tissues, and facilitates removal of inflammatory waste products. Also improves joint stability, paravertebral muscle strength, and flexibility, which in turn decreases pain and improves quality of life.
  • Non-Specific Chronic Lower Back Pain- improves strength, proprioception, and posture leading to decreased pain.
  • Fibromyalgia- helps to stimulate mechano-receptors and desensitize pain receptors, improves production of testosterone, HGH, and Serotonin. Training decreases stiffness and improves mobility.
  • Obesity- boosts metabolism and builds muscle mass. (Healthy eating and daily cardio should be implemented and continued.)
  • Cellulite- increases circulation and loosens up adhesion in connective tissue producing tighter, firmer skin and healthier connective tissue.
  • Parkinson’s Disease/Multiple Sclerosis- improve strength, stability, coordination, and balance. Training helps flexibility, muscular atrophy, and helps prevent falls.

Power Plate® and bioDensity® training 15 minutes once or twice a week is equivalent to 1.5 to 3 hours in the gym and should be used as a supplement to aerobic exercise.

What is the origin of "kaizen"? The Japanese term, kaizen, originated after World War II when industry in Japan needed to rebuild from the devastation that had occurred during the war.  This philosophy defines the means to achieve long-term success-through continuous, incremental changes made at the smallest level.  And so, is an individual, after years of even the most harmless daily habits, most likely to permanently adopt an optimal, healthy lifestyle by making mindful and incremental changes.
