According to a study in the Journal of The American Medical Association (JAMA), when primary care doctors are plentiful, health care not only gets better, but costs go down. Dartmouth Medical School found lower death rates and fewer hospitalizations when patients had their health care provided by qualified physicians in an office setting. There is a DIFFERENCE between GENERAL PRACTITIONERS, FAMILY DOCTORS and INTERNAL MEDICINE SPECIALISTS. We are trained to treat more complex patients and are very skilled at co-coordinating care amongst different specialties.Unfortunately, Internal Medicine doctors will become extinct in the near future since many medical school students opt for higher paying specialties. According to Medical Economics, 50% of small (5 or less physician) practices will close in the next 5 years. CORPORATE and HOSPITAL controlled health care will rule the future. Goodbye Dr. Welby. Hello Wall Street. Medical costs will continue to skyrocket.

Among elderly men, 87% with the worst life expectancy and 65% with the best life expectancy experienced more burden than benefit from fecal occult blood testing. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that colorectal cancer (CRC) screening be discontinued after age 85 (Incorrect! Don't think one can't get colon cancer after the age of 85!) and that decisions to perform screening be individualized for patients aged 75 to 85. Several other guidelines recommend against CRC screening if individual life expectancy is <10 years, but supporting evidence is mostly from short-term follow-up studies.??To assess the benefit versus burden of fecal occult blood test (FOBT) screening in the elderly, researchers conducted a 7-year longitudinal study involving 212 patients (age range, 70–84; 99.5% men) who received positive FOBT results at four Veterans Affairs medical centers. Net benefit was defined as detection of CRC or "significant adenoma" (adenoma ≥1 cm, 3 or more adenomas, or an adenoma with villous features), followed by treatment and survival for ≥5 years. Net burden encompassed false-positive tests, deaths within 5 years of FOBT screening, and undetected cancers when patients declined follow-up. Researchers analyzed benefit status by life expectancy, which they classified as follows, using the Charlson-Deyo comorbidity index (CCI) as a measure of comorbidity:

Beet roots and greens are loaded with healthy nutrients. To prepare greens, steam and flavor them as you would any greens such as turnip or collard greens. For the beet root, I recommend grating them raw onto salads, or, wrapping in foil and roasting in a 400' oven for about an hour, until a knife slides in easily. There are many ways to enjoy beets hot or cold. The beet root is a good source of manganese, folic acid, potassium, phosporous, magnesium, iron and Vitamin B6. Betacyanin is what gives beet roots their rich purple-crimson color and studies show this has cancer-fighting qualtities. Raw or cooked, beet roots are a great source of fiber.

How often should I weigh myself? We recommend only weighing yourself once a week, or even less frequently. The reason for this is that the body can fluctuate by 2-3 lbs daily. Temporary weight increase (usually water retention) can be caused by lack of sleep, stress, a high sodium or carbohydrate meal, alcohol consumption, or a woman's menstrual cycle. Since there are so many variables, daily weighing can lead to confusion and disappointment. Too much emphasis on losing pounds can lead to unhealthy eating habits and the very unfortunate loss of lean muscle vs. stored fat. When you are enrolled in our Venice Nutrition program, we will weigh you every 2 weeks, but also measure your body fat to be sure you are losing just fat, not muscle. You can purchase scales for home use that will measure your body fat along with weight. This would be a wise investment as you can become aware of actual fat loss and make adjustments should you see any muscle loss.

Hot flashes are among the most common symptoms associated with the changing hormonal balances during menopause. These sudden feelings of intense heat accompanied by sweating and rapid heartbeat can last from 2 - 30 minutes... they are not over in a 'flash'. Women experience disrupted sleep, work, and social activities, and may feel more anxious or depressed. Women with higher body mass index (BMI) report more frequent or severe hot flashes compared to women with lower BMI. A 2010 clinical study showed that overweight or obese women can benefit from behavioral weight loss efforts to decrease the burden of their menopausal symptoms. Many problems associated with aging are significantly improved or eliminated when extra pounds are shed. Avoiding Type II Diabetes, back and joint pain, heart disease and stroke are some additional health incentives to keep in mind as you embrace a healthy lifestyle and gradually lose weight through eating well and regular exercise.

bioDensity: How it WorksPosted by drmishner in strength gain , strength , resistance training , biodensity |

Have you noticed that restaurant food is often more salty or fat-laden than anything you eat at home? When you cook, even simple meals or microwaved steamed vegetables, you have the perfect opportunity to control what you and your family are ingesting, so use that to your advantage. Cook with a good quality non-stick pan to cut down on cooking oil which has 199 calories and 14 grams of fat in just one tablespoon. (Olive oil has less, and using a spray like PAM is even better.) Ditch the salt and experiment with herbs and seasonings, or a quick and simple variety of 'Mrs. Dash'. Did you know you can substitute applesauce for cooking oil in recipes you bake? There are many healthy substitutions to try which will surprise you because neither you nor your family will miss the old ingredients. Small changes in cooking methods and recipes add up to big health improvements!

Why is the bioDensity machine more advanced and safer than conventional weight-bearing exercise? With conventional resistance training, a person picks up a weight (or moves a bar that’s connected to a weight stack) and imposes load on the body. In the course of the range of motion there is a risk of injury. With bioDensity™ stimulation however, the load used is created by the individual exerciser. This means that no matter how hard one exercises the load that is being dealt with is never beyond what is safe. This exercise can be done in street clothes and takes less than 5 minutes/week. Combined with our Power Plate, 15 minutes 2-3times/week is like going to the gym for 3 hours/week.
For more information, or to schedule a complimentary demonstration, speak to one of our fitness instructors at Kaizen Total Wellness. 941-556-7788. Most insurances, including Medicare accepted.

Have you ever given thought as to why you want/need to lose weight, quit smoking or get in better shape? Just because a friend (or physician) reccommends this, why would you be motivated to do so?
We all want to feel better and live longer. But we still eat too much, exercise too little and continue to smoke. We also live in denial: Only OTHER people get heart disease or cancer.
When changing your lifestyle, try to think of reasons to motivate you:
- Living a more active lifestyle
- Watching your grandchildren grow up

Here is a simple primer on Heart Attacks: The older you are, the more likely you are to get a heart attack, but younger people are susceptible, too
Risk factors include hypertension, elevated lipids (cholesterol, triglycerides), diabetes, smoking, and obesity.
However, the worst risk factor for heart disease is genetic. A family history or heart disease at a young (<60) age is very worrisome.
Please be aware that 25% of patients have NO chest pain or warnings!
Most men, however will experience a tightness on their chest; women are more likely to complain of shortness of breath, especially when performing routine chores.
Sometimes indigestion can mimic or mask heart disease!

Obesity and lack of exercise linked to chronic pain
(Reuters Health) - It may not be surprising, but people who exercise at least one hour per week have a lower risk of troublesome back, neck, and shoulder pain, a new study shows.
The new evidence supports the possibility that obesity and physical inactivity play a role in a person's risk of developing chronic pain in those areas, said study co-author Dr. Paul Mork, of Norwegian University of Science and Technology in an email to Reuters Health.

Q. What is HPV?
With the recent FDA appproval of the HPV vaccine, many women are looking for Information about this misunderstood virus. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the United States. Approximately 6.2 million people test positive for HPV every year, and close to 50% of sexually active men and women will become infected at some point in their lives.
However, a large portion of the population has never heard of the virus or has limited knowledge. Anyone participating in sexual activity with skin to skin contact is subject to contracting HPV. Most types of HPV are harmless, do not cause any symptoms, and go away on their own. The mean time for clearance of HPV is approximately 8 to 9 months, and it clears in most women by 24 months.

Just file this article away in the it’s too good to be true department. Please note that the small print mentions only OCCASIONALLY eating this way and further down states that the American Heart Association cautions against eating this way.
We used to think that high fat dieters like Atkins were effective in not only losing weight but also in preventing heart disease. However studies in mice showed premature atherosclerosis when eating this way.
At Kaizen, we continue to emphasize healthy eating which DOES consist of fats, carbs and proteins....BUT THE RIGHT FATS, CARBS AND PROTEINS. Hopkins, Schmopkins, don’t do this!
Rejoice, obese people trying to slim down. You may be able to occasionally indulge in steaks and bacon and eggs cooked in butter and still not damage your arteries, according to a study's findings.

New research in the FASEB Journal suggests that protein drinks help older subjects build more formidable muscles than their counterparts who drink carbohydrate beverages!
Bethesda, MD—A new research report appearing online in the FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org) shows that what someone drinks after exercise plays a critical role in maximizing the effects of exercise.
Specifically, the report shows that protein drinks after aerobic activity increases the training effect after six weeks, when compared to carbohydrate drinks. Additionally, this study suggests that this effect can be seen using as little as 20 grams of protein.

Selenium can prevent cancer? Get the facts!Posted by drmishner in wellness , vitamins , selenium , prevent cancer , food supplements , food supplement , fitness , anti-oxidant |

While it is true that everyone needs some salt to function, Americans consume much more salt than they need for the body's balance of fluids. 80% of our total intake comes from salt added to processed foods by manufacturers and salt that restaurant food preparers add. Generally, you should not have more than about a teaspoon of table salt, or 2300 milligrams of sodium a day. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or have been told by your doctor to watch your sodium intake, you should have 1500 mg or less. The 'sodium' on a food label is listed in 'mg' and refers to the amount per serving so always check the serving size. Marketing slogans want us to believe that the 'sea salt' used in their product is a safe and healthy way to get a good flavor. Not true. The sodium content is only slightly reduced. One tsp table salt: 6 grams = 2400 mg sodium. One tsp sea salt: 5 grams = 2000 mg sodium. One tsp Diamond Crystal kosher salt: 2.8 grams = 1120 mg sodium. Sodium balance is critical for optimal health of your heart, kidneys, ateries and brain.

A Unique, Life Changing, Medical Wellness Program by Kaizen Total Wellness
The availability of both the Power Plate and bioDensity technology provides Kaizen clients the maximum benefit possible in personal training with each piece of equipment having unique attributes but both build bone density and muscle strength. With personal one on one instruction by our Certified Fitness Trainers, our clients receive individualized instruction with each session.
The Power Plate equipment stimulates the body’s natural response to vibrations which are transmitted through the equipment to the individual as they are supervised by a certified trainer. The vibrations transmit waves of energy throughout the body causing the muscles to contract at a rate exponentially more efficient than traditional exercise. Fifteen minutes on the Power Plate one to three times a week provides better overall improvement than hours in the gym.
The bioDensity technology uses isometric (push and pull pressure) exercises to build bone mass and muscle strength. Regardless of an individual’s fitness level, the bioDensity system offers benefits through four activities – chest press, leg press, core pull-up, and vertical lift. Exercises are performed in short 5-10 second intervals for maximum results.
The unique bioDensity, Power plate combination at Kaizen provides the optimum fitness training available anywhere, accelerating progress and achieving physical fitness goals more rapidly than using either technology on its own.

We know that eating fish can be healthy, in spite of all the warnings about mercury and other contaminants. Below is a study that showed that not only was the type of fish important to your health but ALSO the way it was prepared.
Baked or broiled fish led to a 30% decrease in heart disease whereas FRIED increased the risk of heart failure.
Be careful the next time you go into a fast food restaurant and skip the burgers to “eat healthy”.
Healthy Fish Linked to Lower Heart Risks
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Postmenopausal women who frequently consume baked or broiled fish may have a lower risk of developing heart failure, according to a new study. However, those who consume a lot of fried fish have a higher risk for heart trouble.

Those in the study who drank the most sugar sweetened beverages had a 26% greater risk of getting diabetes and a 20% higher risk of getting the metabolic syndrome (increased heart disease).
Some people think the using artificial sweeteners are dangerous and can also lead to obesity but there is no proof.

Recent articles explain: Acceleration Training™, also known as vibration training or Whole Body Vibration (WBV), dates as far back as ancient Greece, where a saw covered in cotton was used to transfer vibrations to a specific area of the body requiring treatment.
More recently, in the 1960s and 1970s, Russian cosmonauts used vibration training to combat the detrimental effects of micro-gravity on their muscles, connective tissue
and bones.
Today vibration training methodology draws on this previous experience and knowledge to offer a new form of exercise or therapy; one that is becoming increasingly
accepted and integrated into a wide variety of applications, to improve muscle strength and power, increase flexibility and coordination, and aid weight reduction.

Don't Overlook Pistachios & Brazil NutsPosted by barbara in walnuts , vitamins , vitamin E , selenium , pistachio , pecans , peanuts , nuts , nutritious choices , nutrition and beauty , nutrition , lowering cholesterol , heart problems , heart disease , healthy snack , healthy recipes , healthier recipes , Brazil nuts , antioxidant , almonds |
Nutritional benefits of almonds and walnuts are more commonly known, but other nuts can provide a healthy variety for recipe ingredients or snacks as long as you are getting raw or roasted, not salted or sweetened. Pistachios are rich in lutein, beta-carotene and vitamin E and can have cardiovascular benefits including lowering 'bad' LDL cholesterol. Antioxidants found in pistachios (and many other foods) have been scientifically proven to help with a variety of health concerns including cancer prevention, improved immune function, healthier skin or reduced risk of heart disease. Brazil nuts are an abundant food source of the antioxidant selenium. A recent study showed that eating just one Brazil nut each day for 8 weeks significantly increased plasma selenium status as well as an increase in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase-1 which protects the body from oxidative damage.
